Alone with God by Gwyn Oakes
We often hear people say they are going to “get away” for the weekend or go somewhere apart from the daily grind. We think of trips to the seashore or to the mountains to rejuvenate and refresh ourselves. This is not always an option as time and finances do not allow us the luxury.
I have found there is nothing more refreshing and rejuvenating than to have time alone with God. When we face dark times, feel no one understands, or simply want to be alone and feel His love and care, we can slip away to a quiet place and find Him there. Jesus gave us that example again and again.
The words of an old song come to mind: “Standing somewhere in the shadows you’ll find Jesus.” In a quiet place, whether it is a closed bedroom door, a spot in the backyard, or in our car in a parking lot, God is waiting to meet us. He longs to know that we want to be in His presence, that we want His love and help.
Jesus felt the need to be alone: “And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone” (Matthew 14:23). He taught us by example the importance of setting aside solitary time with God.
In my darkest hours, I find peace and consolation in being alone with Him. When I simply want to reflect and be in His presence, He is always there – just a prayer away. I know from experience that He hears me when I talk to Him. He cares about my fears and frustrations and calms my troubled mind and soul. It is wonderful to share my excitement and joy with Him as well.
Regardless of my situation, my heavenly Father watches over me. When I am alone with Him, I more clearly see the way He wants me to take. He strengthens me, teaches me, and reveals secrets to me – just as He did His disciples. “When they were alone, he expounded all things to his disciples” (Mark 4:34). “And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately” (Mark 6:31-32).
Find a place alone with Him often.
